RYLA - Jessica and Deanna - July 22

Jessica Gruneberg and Deanna Sokoloski attended the RYLA Conference held at Brock University from June 2 to June 7.  RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.  Clubs throughout the District sponsor young people (18-25) for a week-long residence program on leadership.

               

 

                  Jessica Gruneberg and Deanna Sokolowski attended the RYLA Conference held at Brock University from June 2 to June 7.  RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.  Clubs throughout the District sponsor young people (18-25) for a week-long residence program on leadership.

                Deanna is a student at the University of Ottawa and is studying geography.  She is a synchronized swimming coach.   Jessica starts media studies at Sheridan in September.

The program objectives of RYLA are to promote awareness and self-understanding  and the development of interpersonal skills.  Students discuss real world situations and organizational issues.  RYLA participants are from Ontario and New York State.  Each group attending RYLA must come up with a service project.  Jessica and Deanna's group have started a project to fundraise for a children's  orphanage in Kenya.  They plan on raising $6,000 for the Salem Orphanage.  The Salem Orphanage is the home to some 65 children and it houses a primary and secondary school.
