The speaker at the Jan. 8th meeting was Ron Rodgers with his classification talk with the help of his daughter, Kylie Rodgers. Ron is the Executive Director of Rock "Reach out Centre for Kids" which is changing the face of children's mental health, one child at a time.
Ron was initially raised in North Hamilton but moved to Dundas when he was 10. He met his wife, Louise, in high school and has been married 35 years with 4 children. Ron has worked in the area of Children's Services in many parts of Ontario and is presently based in Burlington.
Ron advised us that 20% of all children have some form of mental illness in their school years and that suicide is the 2nd largest cause of death in 15-19 year olds. He stated that timely access is critical and that you should be able to walk into a clinic and receive service. His organization has walk-in clinics in Milton, Oakville and Burlington and also provide residential services. They serve 9700 clients.
Ron enlightened us all of the need for early intervention into the mental illness of children.
