Dr. Chin is Assistant Professor and Global Health Lead in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University. She has worked in many developing countries to help train physicians and surgeons to be better prepared to assist maternal health. Research indicates that a single surgeon in a low-income country can have a lifetime impact on over 400 000 patients through their training alone.
Many medical personal in developing countries learned how to operate on a hemorrhaging uterus by trial and error. Her team's new development is called STITCH (Surgical Trainer for InTerventions to Control Postpartum Hemorrhage). The device is a model of a uterus and is portable, reusable and low-cost. Surgeons can practice using the model before doing surgery on a woman.
Dr. Chin holds a STITCH.
