Dorothy Gaffney and Coralee Hecker from the Schizophrenic Outpatient Clinic at St. Joseph's Healthcare located on West 5th in Hamilton spoke of the 600 patients who use the service. They are referred by family physicians, correctional agencies and psychiatrists. Some are self referrals. One percent of the population experiences schizophrenic behaviour, anything from hallucinations to memory and judgment issues to low motivation. Schizophrenia usually presents itself in late adolescence and there are such things as first episode clinics. Causes are not well understood but range from genetic to environmental. Last Christmas the Dundas Valley Sunrise Rotary Club donated to the clinic to support a Christmas party for 100 patients.
