Ambassadorial Scholar Speaks to the Club

Scholarship/Grant availability depends on our district's contributions to The Rotary Foundation and which programs our district leadership chooses to support with available funds. This year, the district will fund two scholarships - one with a "rebate" to the District from RI and the other from district funds. Under the SHARE system, all district general contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are totaled at the end of the year and then divided into two funds, with 50 percent being credited to the District Designated Fund and 50 percent to the World Fund. The World Fund is used by The Rotary Foundation to underwrite many of its programs, such as 3-H Grants, Matching Grants, and Group Study Exchange, among others, while the District Designated Fund (DDF) may be used at the district's discretion to participate in other Foundation programs such as Ambassadorial Scholarships or Rotary Grants for University Teachers.
In order to sponsor a scholar or university teacher for a given year, the district must have sufficient funding for the program year during which the scholar or teacher will go abroad. The amounts required to sponsor each type of scholarship/grant for program year 2008-09 are as follows:
-Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship: US$23,000
-Two-year Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship: US$23,000
-Three-month Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship: US$10,000
-Six-month Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship: US$15,000
-Three to five month Rotary Grant for University Teacher: US$12,500
-Six to ten month Rotary Grant for University Teacher: US$22,500
Eligibility Criteria
-All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there are Rotary clubs.
-Applicants must have completed at least two years of college-level coursework or equivalent professional experience before commencing their scholarship studies.
-Initial application must be made through a Rotary club in the applicant's legal or permanent residence or place of full-time study or employment.
-Candidates cannot be Rotarians, Honorary Rotarians, or employees of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International. Spouses, lineal descendants (child or grandchild by blood or legal adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, and ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of persons in the foregoing categories are also ineligible. Please note that Rotarians and their relatives remain ineligible for scholarship awards for 36 months after a Rotarian has resigned from club membership.
-The scholarships are not appropriate for students seeking to continue studies already begun at a foreign institution.
-Persons with disabilities and members of Rotaract clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply.
-In addition to the criteria listed above, applicants for Academic-Year and Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships must be proficient in the language of the proposed host country. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship applicants must have completed at least one year of college-level coursework or equivalent in the proposed language of study.
